Support to Enhance Quality of Life for Alzheimer's Patients

Alzheimer’s is an insidious disease, one that begins slowly and progresses to the point that a person’s emotional and cognitive abilities are severely affected, with no hope of a cure. Signs that something may be wrong are usually first noted by family, friends or even the patients themselves.

Early treatment is key in that it can temporarily slow the progression of cognitive decline. The tried-and-true prescription for effective care is similar to that of the younger population: activity. In fact, studies have suggested that higher levels of physical and mental exercise, as well as regular social interaction and intellectual stimulation, may help maintain cognitive function and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s. The support of family and/or caregivers is key. Here are some guidelines for what you, as a caregiver, can do for your loved one:

Adapt the living situation: Establishing and strengthening routine habits can make life easier and can help slow mental decline. Keep environment organized – and encourage the senior to do household tasks that will give them a sense of accomplishment.

• Brain games: These can include everything from singing and painting, to puzzles and board games that challenge the mind.

Activity and involvement: Continue to keep aging loved ones active in hobbies and interests that gave them pleasure. Create meaningful activities designed to stir memories, encourage self-expression and encourage social connections.

• Diet and exercise are key: Even moderate exercise and a balanced diet packed with vital vitamins and nutrients can help improve brain function and the physical health of seniors who are frail or who have diseases that accompany aging.
